Censored Life

March 26, 2007

As a musician in Dubai you can’t just get up on stage and play, there is no such thing as jamming or a session. To play here you need to be licenced to a hotel, who audition you, check your music is innocuous (no sex, drugs, rock and roll or politics) and then tell you what to play and you play.

The Dubai Music Scene

As a musician in Dubai you can’t just get up on stage and play, there is no such thing as jamming or a session. To play here you need to be licenced to a hotel, who audition you, check your music is innocuous (no sex, drugs, rock and roll or politics) and then tell you what to play and you play.

Yep Boring! Fantastic musicians, but one can only listen to 70’s, 80’s and 90’s covers and smile for so long and then I need to be very very drunk! and not to mention the dreaded karaoke!

Another fallout of this censorship is the worlds top dj’s are God’s here - they get past the rule as they rock up with records. So each week in Dubai there is some DJ, maybe the worlds 7th greatest DJ, I think last week it was the 12th, filling up the dancefloors - commercial heaven.

Sometimes - I want to break free!
