Finally settled, trying to focus on the music.

Finally we feel like we have settled in. As always, with moving to a new country, the first few months are hetic.
I started college at The Institute of Contemporary Music (higher diploma in performance - voice) great atmosphere, surrounded by many talented people. Recently I have spent alot of time contemplating the intricacies of our voices, plenty of food for thought. I have been removed from my comfort zone and studying the techniques of a range of artists from Bonnie Raitt to Usher to Etta James, discovered that I really like the Blues.

We hope to try and get a band started and perhaps in 2/3months gig live in London, will keep you posted.

The FINE are relocating to London in April to avoid the Dubai Summer heat and hopefully find some inspiration.

Claire is going back to college to sing and Dinesh will do the Flip thing from the London office, and maybe regain his sanity!

If any musicians/artisits/music friends based in London would like to hook up and have a beer and give us the low down on London music scene, we would love to meet, just drop us a line.

Also, we are looking to work with some musicians too, listen to the music, if it floats your boat, get in touch.

Hold On, is doing really well in the Garageband.com charts, track of the week and best vocals again.

Slan!

It's been a while since we wrote. Over Christmas we wrote the new Flip song.

December was a crazy month work wise, so our music took a bit of a back seat.

Although we did write the new signature song for Dinesh’s company - Flip, I love it! which went down a storm at the xmas party where we performed with Mazen (a flipper) and the house band from Jambase (the best supper club in Dubai).

Went to South Africa for Christmas and New Year, enjoyed the time off. We saw a fab ‘rock & roll’ review show, Elvis was in the house, still young, fit and rocking!

I was also awarded best female vocals on Garageband, again, for the week of Dec 24th, so I’m happy about that.

This year is basically an open book, we are moving to London for six months, who knows where the road will take us.

I wish you all the very best for 2008.

I'm not going :(
Recently bought the New Rufus Wainwright and Ryan Adams albums

I’d really love to hear from anyone going to the Summer Music Festivals overseas, share the experience, let me know what your favourite bands and moments were.

I recently bought the new Rufus Wainwright and Ryan Adams albums, I’m impressed with both.

Rufus, post rehab, has, as usual, created a modern opera of love and pain with ‘Release the Stars’. It’s a more accessable album and maybe the one to launch him to super stardom, debuted at No.2 in the UK.

Ryan Adams, also post rehab, has presented a very raw album ‘Easy Tiger’ and at moments he reminds me of early Neil Young. Musical backing is once again provided by The Cardinals, they have created some beautiful tones to support Ryans’ songs.

To discover and understand beauty, they say that you have to experience pain and hurt first.

A Fine Hero

An unexpected benefit of blogging is when it helps me discover new music that I otherwise would never have found. Recently, I was contacted by Dinesh Lalvani in Dubai about a song from his group The Fine. The music is a mixture of rock, electronica and strong vocals from fellow group member Claire Murphy.

They have a 4-song EP done that is available for purchase online. I understand they’re working on a full album. You can find more information on Dinesh & Claire on their site at http://thefine.net/ which I urge you to visit. You can also head to their MySpace spot.

The first song featured here is Hero which couples a rock beat with some beautiful guitar work and Claire’s clear vocals. It has a catchy melody and the combination of rock and acoustic ballad that I like so much (as you may have guessed from the selections of Triumph and Uriah Heep that were featured on this blog earlier).

If you like the song, why don’t you add a comment to this post and I’m sure Dinesh and/or Claire will respond to any of your compliments or criticisms! Let them know if you want to hear more and maybe they’ll send me another song for me to post here.

Review posted on arjanwrites.com. Many thanks to Arjan for the fantastic review. Also available on indiestore.com

A good friend of mine recently spent a short time in Dubai and called it one of the most amazing places he had ever seen with its dazzling architecture and obscene display of kitsch. Dubai is a twenty-first century city with a universal cosmopolitan appeal where Middle Eastern riches, Asian finesse and Western pop culture intersect.

Dubai-based electro-pop outfit The Fine perfectly captures the city’s unique blend of cultures. The group is made up of Dubai born synth meister Dinesh and vocalist Clair who is originally from Ireland. The two met in Dubai and struck an immediate connection. Over the past few months, they have been recording music in Bombay, India with hotshot Bollywood producer Clinton Cerejo. More recently, they spent time in London to finalize mixing the songs. Their self-titled EP is now available for download in MP3 format on 7Digital.

“Hero” is the lead track taken from the EP. It is a beautifully orchestrated, mesmerizing tune that brings together an amalgam of influences, starting with the duo’s own unique ethnic perspectives. This is one of those soothing tracks that you play on a long-haul flight to drift away high in the sky.

The song is based on an idea that people across the globe can relate to. “‘Hero’ is inspired by a conversation I have had with myself a few times in my life,” Claire writes me. “When I felt everything was hopeless, that I was tamed, caged, locked and lost. You are the hero, only you can change the direction of your life and how you live it, don’t let the sea drown you.” (Many thanks to Dinesh for reaching out to Arjanwrites.com and allowing me to share his music.)

We’re doing a photoshoot tomorrow to capture The FINE emotion thru the lens. Should be fun, although we may need a few shots to loosen up first! Our photographer Celia has been great in hooking us up with a stylist and hair and make up girl, so much has to be done, but hopefully we’ll get a couple pics we’re both happy with.

Currently working on Dearest Mary, we finally got the time to lay the tracks down, sounding good. It’s weird how music and words merge to create a song, you just hear the music, get a feeling and the lyrics roll.

I’d like to thank everyone we met in London, particularly Steve, Darren and Jon, thanks for your input, it’s invaluable. We went to London sounding good, now the songs sound great.

X factor encounters with Avenue & Fall Out Boy - case of mistaken identity

The recent disqualified x-factor boy band Avenue are here at Pierce Entertainment cutting some sounds. Had a discussion about the competitiveness in the boyband market and how they would need to work hard to break thru, seem’s they are ready for the hard work and enjoying the time, better then sitting at home or working the checkout line. The tea boy is sweet.

Fall Out Boy play at the hammersmith tonight, queues galore! If we leave the studio we have to walk past the adoring young fans, all of them wondering who we are coz the gates are opened for us and security say ‘hello’! Oh to be a star!

We finished mixing ‘Loving it!’, printed and moved onto ‘Come one Come All’, decided to keep the live drums, Steve is working his magic. Having fun, the boys have gotten into a Table Tennis league, currently Steve is the top dog.

Popped into Trevor Horn’s - Sarm Studios in Portobello to visit my old friend Ed, who is in London with the beautiful Laura Davis working with Future Cuts, who produced Lily Allen, really sound guys.

Laura is finishing her album so hopefully you will all be given the opportunity soon to experience her soulful sonics.

Ed gave us some great tips and listened to The Fine, think he liked it, and that’s not beacuse I’m one of ‘the gang’.

History! Country of Residence - Dubai, UAE.

Dinesh is Indian, born in Dubai, grew up here, before he got a ticket to New York to study, lived there 5 years, took it all in, discovered the Blues and Jazz. Headed back to Dubai, then Bombay, an experience by all accounts and now back in Dubai.

Me, Claire, Irish, born in Waterford, Ireland, headed to London with a band at 18, 2 years gigging and plugging the band, disillusioned, headed back to Dublin, got a career, drank beer, had fun, couple of relationships, then an epiphany, didn’t like what I saw, closed up shop in Dublin and moved to Dubai (strange I know), got a job, met Dinesh and we started writing music. Became The FINE and the rest is History….

The Dubai Music Scene

As a musician in Dubai you can’t just get up on stage and play, there is no such thing as jamming or a session. To play here you need to be licenced to a hotel, who audition you, check your music is innocuous (no sex, drugs, rock and roll or politics) and then tell you what to play and you play.

Yep Boring! Fantastic musicians, but one can only listen to 70’s, 80’s and 90’s covers and smile for so long and then I need to be very very drunk! and not to mention the dreaded karaoke!

Another fallout of this censorship is the worlds top dj’s are God’s here - they get past the rule as they rock up with records. So each week in Dubai there is some DJ, maybe the worlds 7th greatest DJ, I think last week it was the 12th, filling up the dancefloors - commercial heaven.

Sometimes - I want to break free!

Why do countries interpret the support from the democratic war machine to believe that they have a carte blanche to also murder, cross boarders illegally and brutalize nations of people Why is the solution to send in the marines?

Why bother with the democratic political process, UN resolutions, I think we’re all losing faith in these processes and the leaders behind them.

I wonder when, where and how it will all end?

“War doesn’t determine who is right, war determines who is left” - basic math.

Been thinking about this and Kevin Carter today.

The media sells disease, famine, war and death. Each day goes by another young man dies.

I am just trying to live my life on this earth. I do not see colour or creed, caste, nor feel hate. But yet why is my life threatened by a minority who wish that I have no breath or voice in this life. I’m tired of trying to understand this.

We need an awakening, you and me, the little people, need to fight for our rights and dignity. Carry our hopes and the hopes of others, open dialogue, we need to bridge the ignorance gap, not the political or religious leaders, whose greed and false righteousness has blinded them.

We need to take our futures back into our hands.
